It was an absolute HONOUR to be asked to design a tote for the Royal Bison’s Spring 2022 fair. The concept was up to me whether I wanted to include a light concept of spring or not, which of course I did. Two of my favourite signifiers of spring are blossoms (obviously—you’re a monster if you disagree) and watching the North Saskatchewan River thaw while biking across the Highlevel Bridge. When coming up with my concept for the Spring Royal Bison tote design, I wanted to visualize the progression of spring in Edmonton—half of which is basically winter—by illustrating a Goldeye fish swimming through a blooming crabapple tree. Goldeye are a common species found in the North Sask and are best caught in the spring during and after the thaw! Who knew‽ Not I, until I googled: “What kind of fish can you catch in the North Saskatchewan River?” and found my muse for this springtime scene.
